What respirator do I need for mold?

Respirators only work with a good face-to-facepiece seal: facial hair along the seal breaks it, and tight-fitting respirators should be fit-tested (workplace remediation under OSHA requires a written respiratory-protection program, medical evaluation, and fit testing). Disturbing mold sharply increases airborne spores, so contain the area with plastic sheeting, mist/wet moldy materials to suppress dust, and ventilate. Mold left by flooding or sewage ('black water', Category 3) can also carry bacteria and other pathogens — treat it as more hazardous. People with asthma, mold allergies, or weakened immune systems should not do the cleanup themselves and should avoid the area even when mold is undisturbed. If using bleach or other biocides, never mix with ammonia and ensure fresh-air ventilation. Use goggles WITHOUT ventilation holes and long gloves (nitrile, neoprene, PVC, polyurethane, or natural rubber); dispose of porous moldy materials that cannot be cleaned.

When to call a professional: Call a licensed mold remediation professional (or follow EPA's 'Mold Remediation in Schools and Commercial Buildings' / ACGIH guidance) when: the affected area is larger than about 10 square feet (roughly a 3 ft x 3 ft patch), and especially over 100 sq ft; the mold followed sewage or contaminated floodwater; your HVAC/duct system is involved; mold keeps coming back or you cannot find and fix the underlying moisture source; or building occupants have asthma, allergies, or compromised immune systems. Professionals use containment, negative-air/HEPA machines, and PAPR or supplied-air respirators with proper training.

Minimum

NIOSH-approved N95 filtering facepiece respirator (small jobs under ~10 sq ft). This is the EPA minimum for DIY mold cleanup — but it does NOT protect the eyes, so pair it with non-vented goggles.

Recommended

For larger or heavy mold (roughly 10-100 sq ft, black-mold/Stachybotrys, or dusty demolition): a half-face or full-face air-purifying respirator (APR) fitted with P100 filters. A full-face model or non-vented goggles are strongly preferred because spores and fragments irritate the eyes. For jobs over ~100 sq ft, EPA recommends a full-face powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) with P100 filters.

Which filter or cartridge?

NIOSH particulate filter. N95 (95%) is the minimum; P100 (99.97%, oil-proof, typically magenta) is the robust choice for larger/heavy mold. Because mold spores are a PARTICULATE, no chemical (organic-vapor) cartridge is needed for the mold itself. Only add an organic-vapor / combination cartridge if you are also using strong chemical biocides or bleach that give off fumes — that is a separate vapor hazard.

What NOT to use

Do NOT rely on a cloth mask, bandana, surgical/procedure mask, or an unrated 'dust mask' — none are NIOSH-approved and they leak around the edges. KN95 masks are not NIOSH-certified and should not be substituted for an N95 for remediation work. A bare N95 alone is inadequate for anything but the smallest jobs because it leaves the eyes unprotected and seals poorly. Note the reverse of the common mistake too: for the mold itself you do NOT need an organic-vapor chemical cartridge — a particulate filter is the correct choice.
