What respirator do I need for concrete & masonry dust?

Respirable crystalline silica is a Group 1 human carcinogen; inhaling the fine dust from cutting, grinding, drilling, or sawing concrete, brick, block, stone, mortar, or tile causes silicosis, lung cancer, COPD, and kidney disease. The damage is cumulative and irreversible, and dangerous levels are invisible. ENGINEERING CONTROLS COME FIRST, not the mask: use wet methods (water-fed blade / continuous water spray at the cut) or a tool-mounted shroud + HEPA vacuum dust collection, plus good ventilation; the respirator is a supplement to these controls, never a substitute. The respirator only works if it seals to your face — an elastomeric half/full mask should be fit-tested, and beards or stubble break the seal. Also protect bystanders and family: keep others away, don't track dust indoors, wet-clean or HEPA-vacuum debris (never dry sweep), and keep the respirator on until airborne dust settles. This is OSHA-regulated for workers under 29 CFR 1926.1153 (construction) — PEL 50 ug/m3 as an 8-hour TWA, action level 25 ug/m3.
When to call a professional: Call a professional for large-scale concrete/masonry demolition or removal; for prolonged or indoor/enclosed dry cutting and grinding where dust cannot be controlled with water and HEPA collection; and especially for ENGINEERED-STONE or natural-stone countertop fabrication, which is a leading cause of severe, rapid modern silicosis. Any job that cannot be kept below exposure limits with wet methods and HEPA dust collection needs trained crews using PAPR or supplied-air respirators, containment, and exposure monitoring.

A disposable N95/P95 filtering facepiece is the absolute regulatory floor only for brief, outdoor, low-dust work done with water/wet cutting or a HEPA dust-collection shroud (this is the OSHA 1926.1153 Table 1 minimum). NIOSH-approved reusable elastomeric half-mask fitted with P100 filters, used together with engineering controls. For heavy, prolonged, indoor/enclosed, or dry cutting and grinding — or when dust can't be kept down — step up to a full-facepiece or a powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) with P100/HEPA (APF 25-50).
Which filter or cartridge?
P100 particulate filter — NIOSH 100-series, 99.97% efficiency, HEPA-level (color-coded magenta). N95/P95 is acceptable only as a short-duration minimum. No gas/vapor chemical cartridge is required or useful: crystalline silica is a solid mineral dust, not a vapor.
What NOT to use
Do NOT rely on a cloth, surgical, neck-gaiter, or single-strap 'comfort'/nuisance dust mask — none are NIOSH-rated, none seal, and they do essentially nothing against respirable (sub-10-micron) silica that lodges deep in the lungs. Do NOT assume you need an organic-vapor or other chemical cartridge (this is a dust, not a vapor) — but never wear a cartridge respirator with the particulate filter removed. A dry cut/grind protected only by an N95 with no water or HEPA dust control is inadequate. A respirator with a broken face seal (facial hair, wrong size, not fit-tested) offers little real protection.
